BRIEF GUIDE TO WATER TESTS

BACTERIA TEST:

Checks for bacteria that can indicate contamination of your drinking water.

Test includes Coliform and E. Coli:

Coliform Bacteria (Part of Bacteria Test)

  • Common bacteria found in soil, plants, and water; their presence can indicate possible contamination.

  • Contamination can be more likely when a well is near a septic system, livestock, or surface water, particularly if the well or septic system is poorly maintained.

E. coli (Part of Bacteria Test)

  • A type of bacteria associated with human and animal waste and a stronger indicator of fecal contamination.

Its presence can indicate that other disease-causing germs may have entered the drinking water.

LEAD

  • A toxic metal that can enter drinking water from lead-containing plumbing, fixtures, solder, or well components.

  • Even low-level exposure can harm the developing brain and nervous system, particularly in children and during pregnancy.

NITRATES

  • A nitrogen compound commonly associated with fertilizers, animal waste, septic systems, and groundwater.

  • High levels can interfere with the blood’s ability to carry oxygen and are especially dangerous for infants.

NITRITES

  • A form of nitrogen that can enter groundwater from fertilizers, animal waste, and septic systems.

  • Elevated levels can interfere with the blood’s ability to carry oxygen, with infants being particularly vulnerable.

ARSENIC

  • A naturally occurring element that can enter groundwater from local rock and soil.

  • Long-term exposure to elevated levels can increase the risk of certain cancers and other health effects.

MANGANESE

  • A naturally occurring mineral commonly found in groundwater based on local geology.

  • Elevated levels can affect the nervous system, particularly in children, and may cause dark staining on plumbing fixtures or discoloration of water.
